This Month’s Fun Fact
How did you travel from Canon City to Pleasant Valley, in the late 1800’s, long before Highway 50 was built in 1915?
In 1872 the Fremont County Commissioners agreed to improve an Indian trail so that stagecoaches and freight wagons could travel between Canon City and the growing mining towns on the upper Arkansas River. The circuitous route crossed the river at Parkdale, traveling up what is now Copper Gulch Road, along Road Gulch, CO 69, to County Road 1A, cross country through the hills into Pleasant Valley at Coaldale. Below are photos of the Concord Stage Coach and a map of Western Fremont County.
